European Pig Producers Congress

From 29.05 - 31.05.24 the pig industry will meet in Nantes in France at the European Pig Producers Congress.

Every year, the European Pig Producers Association organises information and exchange events in different countries, this year with the theme ‘How to engage the consumer?’ Christin Roguet from the IFIP Institut du porc told us that 56% of pigs are kept in Brittany. The typical farm structure is a family farm with around 230 sows and 102 ha per farm. In the closed system, 80 % of the sows and 62 % of the fattening pigs are kept.

In France, the number of pigs fell by 7.1 % between 2000 and 2010 and by 3.5 % between 2010 and 2020.

The concentration of farrowing is strong: 4.400 farms in 2020 vs 10.200 farms in 2000.

On site at the ifip experimental farm, we congress participants were given a digital insight into the various stables and had the opportunity to view a mobile CT (computer tomograph), in which live pigs and carcasses are scanned and conclusions can also be drawn about meat quality.
